Highway Rider Extreme is a motorbike racing game seen from behind the rider. You weave through traffic on a four-lane highway and try to reach the finish line of each stage before the clock runs out. It is distributed through Famobi, and everything you earn in a race goes toward faster bikes and upgrades in the garage.

Controls

• Keyboard: the left and right arrow keys steer the bike between lanes.
• Phone or tablet: there are three control styles you can switch between in the pause menu – tilting the device (when it has a motion sensor), tapping the left or right half of the screen, or dragging a finger across the screen.

How a stage works

Stages are picked from a map, and the route opens up one stage at a time; there are 30 regular stages, and each one asks for a longer ride than the last. A timer counts down at the top of the screen, and it beeps as it gets low. Cars and trucks fill the lanes, and hitting one throws you off and cuts your speed in half, which usually costs more time than any other mistake.

The timer can be pushed back while you ride. Each close pass, where you slip past a vehicle without touching it, adds a time bonus. Coins lie on the road too, and bonus coins are worth double. The game also counts the seconds you spend riding at top speed.

At the end of a stage your score is built from the time you had left, your close passes, your seconds at speed and the coins you picked up. Even a failed stage pays out coins for the passes and coins you collected, so a bad run still moves you forward.

Bikes and upgrades

The bike shop holds nine bikes. Each one is faster and steers more sharply than the one before, and each costs more coins. On the upgrade screen you can improve any bike you own in four areas, up to five steps each, and the price goes up with every step and with better bikes. When you have enough coins for the next bike, a new-bike button lights up on the menus.

Daily race

Once you have cleared the first stage, a calendar button appears on the map. It starts a bonus race that can be played once per day, which is a handy extra source of coins.

Tips

• Close passes are worth chasing: every one adds time and points. Just do not cut it so fine that you clip the vehicle.
• Play the daily race every day you play; it is free coins.
• Spend coins on upgrades for your current bike before saving for the next one if you keep running out of time.
